Crimson Death is an Ontario-based Jungle DJ, whose music is influenced by the sounds and imagery of Black Metal. Known for his extreme studio creations, unique covers and high energy remixes, he seamlessly blends elements of opposing genres into dynamic dance-floor anthems. We took a listen to his new track '“Haven”, here’s what we thought….
From the first 30 seconds of "Haven" by Crimson Death vs. Pixieguts, you are transported to a dark nightclub pumping out heavy Drum & Bass; then RIPPED away to the dark forests of Norway as you hear DJ Crimson Death's guttural screams and sinister lyrics.
Welcome to the world of "Grave Music" (a mixture of Goth & Rave), a unique combination of dark-themed songs backed by an industrial house beat.
The influences of DJ Crimson Death are clear from his first line, with a voice sounding quite similar to Hoest of Norwegian Black Metal act ‘Taake’. As he bellows lyrics like, "Together we will fade away and you shall be reborn..", he not only channels Black Metal but delivers the lyrics with a vocal rap-like pace, creating a mood where you don't know whether to bob or bang your head and throw up your metal horns!!
A surprise guest then enters around the one minute mark; Pixieguts, an Australian singer with an angelic voice delivers a line that says, "....We can never go back home...". Her light and breathy words contrast perfectly with DJ Crimson; giving his voice even more raw power with the next verse.
The song continues at a rapid pace but with a steady groove; the intertwining of Norwegian Black Metal influence with his love of house, industrial and drum and bass really shine through. He on occasion will even bear the marks of Black Metal - corpse paint that is 100 percent reminiscent of Per Yngve Ohlin (aka Dead), the late lead singer of the band ‘Mayhem’, complete with spikes and leather. He sites Mayhem as one of his inspirations; as well as Arcturus (from Norway) and the very intense industrial band ‘Mindless Self Indulgence’.
The song clocks in at around 3:30 and before you know it, your ears have been assaulted with hints of black metal, industrial and that intense drum and bass beat with a barrage of very fierce and dark lyrics. It almost becomes hypnotic in a way that black metal and jungle roots always do with the listener - especially if you are a fan of either genre.
DJ Crimson Death has the chops to belt out the striking lyrics, with the lovely Pixieguts giving it that unique spin with her airy vocals. This is definitely a hybrid worth more than a few listens.
DJ Crimson Death is signed to F&G Records, based in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England and is due to release his first record Towards the Blue Light later this year
